ChatGPT File Upload Not Working What to Check First
If ChatGPT accepts other files but rejects one specific upload, the file itself is more likely to be the problem. If every file fails, check the OpenAI status page and test another browser, network, or device before clearing browser data or reinstalling the app.
The fastest way to diagnose a ChatGPT file upload problem is to find out whether the failure follows one file or affects every upload. That distinction helps you avoid unnecessary resets and data deletion.
First, test a different small file
Try uploading a small file that does not contain private information. A short PDF or TXT file works well for this test.
What the result means
- Only one file fails: Check that file’s format, size, filename, protection settings, or integrity.
- Several unrelated files fail: Check ChatGPT’s status, your account, browser, app, network, and upload allowance.
- The file works in a new chat: The original conversation may be temporarily stuck.
- The file works on another device: Focus on the original browser, app, permissions, or network.
This test is more useful than immediately clearing cookies or reinstalling the app because it narrows the cause without removing settings or signing you out.
Check whether ChatGPT is having an upload problem
File uploads can fail because of a service-side incident. Before changing your device or browser, check the OpenAI status page.
Look for an active incident involving ChatGPT file uploads, file processing, downloads, or elevated errors. If an incident is still being investigated, local troubleshooting may not solve the problem until OpenAI restores the service.
A normal status page does not prove that every account is working correctly. Availability can still vary by account, plan, workspace, model, or feature.
Make sure the file type is supported
ChatGPT supports common document, spreadsheet, presentation, and text formats. OpenAI currently lists formats including:
- DOCX
- PPTX
- XLSX and XLS
- CSV and TSV
- TXT
Other text and data formats may also be available depending on the model, plan, workspace settings, and account capabilities.
ChatGPT does not currently support the small .gdoc shortcut file directly. Open the document in Google Docs and download it as a PDF or DOCX file instead.
Do not change only the extension at the end of a filename. Renaming document.gdoc to document.pdf does not convert it into a real PDF.
Compare the file with the upload limits
OpenAI currently documents the following maximums:
- 512 MB for an individual file
- 20 MB for an individual image
- Approximately 50 MB for a CSV or spreadsheet, depending on row size
- 2 million tokens for a text or document file
A document can be smaller than 512 MB and still exceed the text-processing limit if it contains an unusually large amount of text. Spreadsheet limits can also vary with the structure and size of the rows.
These limits can change. Check OpenAI’s File Uploads FAQ when a file is close to a limit.
Create a clean copy of the file
A supported file can still fail if it is incomplete, damaged, encrypted, password-protected, or exported incorrectly.
- Open the file in the app normally used to view or edit it.
- Make sure the entire file opens without a repair warning.
- Choose Save As, Export, or Download.
- Save a new copy in a common supported format.
- Use a short filename with ordinary letters and numbers.
- Upload the new copy in a new ChatGPT conversation.
If the document is password-protected or encrypted, create an unprotected copy only when you are authorized to do so. Do not upload confidential material merely to test the feature.
Try the file in a new conversation
If other uploads work but one conversation refuses the file, start a new chat and attach the same file there.
Copy any important prompt, instructions, or draft text before moving to a new conversation. A new chat will not automatically include all the context from the original one.
If the file works in the new chat, continue there and provide a short summary of the context ChatGPT needs. Do not delete the original conversation unless you are certain you no longer need it.
Test a private browser window
A browser extension or stored browser session can interfere with uploads. Common causes include privacy extensions, script blockers, antivirus web filters, VPNs, proxies, and managed workplace networks.
Open ChatGPT in a private or incognito window and test the same non-sensitive file. If the upload works there, the normal browser profile is more likely to be involved.
Return to the regular browser and disable extensions one at a time. This is safer than deleting all browser data immediately.
Try another trusted network
Switch between Wi-Fi and a trusted mobile connection. If the file works on one network but not the other, the original network may be blocking or interrupting the upload.
Workplace, school, hotel, and public networks may use filters that affect file transfers. Avoid uploading private documents over an unfamiliar public network.
Refresh ChatGPT or sign in again
If every file fails and no service incident is reported, refresh ChatGPT and try again. Close duplicate ChatGPT tabs before reopening the site.
In the mobile or desktop app, fully close the app and reopen it. You can also compare the app with ChatGPT on the web.
Confirm whether you normally sign in with Google, Apple, Microsoft, a phone number, or an email address. Choosing a different method can place you in another account that does not contain your existing chats or subscription.
Check whether you reached an upload limit
File uploads can have limits separate from the main ChatGPT message limit. The available allowance can depend on your plan, recent usage, workspace, storage use, and current system conditions.
OpenAI currently states that Free users have a lower file-upload allowance than paid users. Failed upload attempts may sometimes count toward the upload-rate limit.
If ChatGPT displays an upload-limit message:
- Confirm that you are signed into the correct account and workspace.
- Do not keep retrying the same file repeatedly.
- Wait until the displayed limit resets.
- Check Settings > Storage if that option is available in your account.
- Review files stored in chats, Projects, and custom GPT knowledge before deleting anything.
Deleting a chat can also remove access to files associated with that conversation. Preserve anything important before removing stored content.
Update the app and compare it with the web version
If uploads fail only in the ChatGPT app, install the latest official app update and test the same account at chatgpt.com.
- The web version works: The app version, device permission, or local app state is more likely to be involved.
- The app works: Focus on the browser profile, extensions, cookies, or network filtering.
- Both fail: Check the account, file, upload allowance, network, and service status.
Reinstalling the app should be a later step. Confirm that your important chats are visible in your account and that you know the correct sign-in method before removing the app.
Clear browser data only after simpler tests
Clearing ChatGPT site data may help when a browser session is corrupted, but it will sign you out and may remove local site preferences.
Try a new chat, private window, another browser, and another trusted network first. If the problem occurs only in one browser profile, clear the site data for ChatGPT rather than deleting all browsing history and cookies.
Make sure you know your account email and normal sign-in method. Never share your password or verification code with anyone offering to troubleshoot the problem.
When to contact OpenAI Support
Contact OpenAI Support when several supported files fail across more than one browser, device, or trusted network and no active incident explains the problem.
Include the following details:
- The exact error message
- The approximate time of the failure and your time zone
- Whether one file or every file fails
- The file type and approximate size
- Your device and operating system
- Your browser or ChatGPT app version
- Whether the upload works in a new chat or another browser
- Your plan or workspace type
- A request ID, if ChatGPT displays one
You can reach official support through the chat option at the OpenAI Help Center.
Do not send passwords, verification codes, payment details, or confidential documents. When possible, use a non-sensitive sample file that produces the same error.
The most useful clue is whether the problem follows one file or follows your account and device. Once you know that, you can focus on the checks most likely to help instead of resetting everything at once.
